The Story

From laid off to FINE

The unvarnished story of how a career in high tech ended overnight — and why that turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to my money.

For almost two decades, I lived inside a single industry. The first half as a consultant — the one they sent in when the problem was messy, the one who got promoted as high as a consultant could go. The second half as a manager leading a team of consultants implementing enterprise software for some of the largest companies in the world.

I was, by every external measure, a HENRY. High earner. Not rich yet. Six figures, benefits, the title, the respect. And like most HENRYs, I had never once sat down and looked at all of my money in one place.

Then one morning, along with so many others, I was gone.

The company had poured heavily into AI infrastructure and needed to recoup. Entire teams, dissolved in a single call. No warning, no performance issue — just capex math. I was a line item in someone else's spreadsheet now.

That first week, I did what every laid-off person does. I started opening accounts — 401(k), brokerage, HSA, the savings I'd been meaning to consolidate for a decade — and for the first time in my life, I actually looked.

The gap between what I earned and what I knew was staggering. I had built a career helping other companies see their data clearly, and I had never done it for myself.

The irony wasn't lost on me: I lost my job to AI. So I decided to use AI to build the thing I wished I'd had all along. Turn the adversity into the advantage.

I'd done this before without realizing it was a pattern. A few years back, trapped indoors, I bought a bike on a whim. What started as something to do became a genuine passion. The lockdown ended; the cycling never did.

Same instinct, different adversity. Lose your job to AI? Build something with AI. The tool you can't find is the tool you build.

I play guitar in a local band. WealthFlow helped me see that the music doesn't have to stay a hobby — it can be part of the next chapter.

The pandemic gave me cycling. The layoff gave me clarity. Sometimes the disruption is the path forward.

WealthFlow didn't just calm the panic. It replaced it with a plan. No more scrambling for the next W2 out of fear. Instead — a home business, monetized hobbies, and the freedom to pursue whatever comes next.

I built this to be frictionless — away from manual calculations, notes, and worksheets. The layoff led me to this path, and if it helps one other HENRY see their numbers clearly enough to know when they're ready to escape the grind and find their next endeavor, then it was worth it.
